What are some common issues that can arise with BSP Thread fittings?
Here are some common issues that can arise with (British Standard Pipe) BSP thread fittings:
Cross-threading
Occurs when the fitting is not started straight onto the male thread, resulting in a damaged thread. Can cause leaks.
Over tightening
Excessive force strips threads or cracks fitting/pipe. Thread sealant is not a substitute for proper tightening technique.
Under tightening
Not reaching optimal thread engagement leads to leaks over time as seal is not fully compressed.
Mismatched thread types
Incorrect male/female threads (BSPT, BSPP, etc) will not fit together properly.
Pipe end not cut square
Angled cuts prevent full thread forming which can compromise the seal.
Debris in threads
Dirt, chips etc. caught in threads prevents proper mating and sealing of tapered threads.
Thread wear
From frequent assembly/disassembly, up to 5 uses is typical life expectancy of a thread.
Thread damage
Nick or gouge compromises sealing surface integrity and alignment of thread profile.
Corrosion
Over time, builds up in threads and inhibits assembly or causes leakage.
Proper cleaning, sealing and installation technique helps avoid common BSP thread problems.
